Ridley House offers a charming, walkable location near Duval Street with friendly staff and excellent on-site chef-prepared breakfast. However, the historic property presents mixed quality regarding room maintenance and cleanliness, along with notable noise issues, making it better suited for guests who value character over perfection.
The Ridley House is in a good location just off Duval Street and near Mallory Square. You can easily walk to these locations and have access to the trolly or hop on hop off bus access areas. The woman in the reception area was friendly and informative. The staff member who cooked breakfast was also quite personable and set up a very nice buffet breakfast, which was delicious. Fresh croissants, scrambled eggs, pancakes, fresh fruit, yogurt...the buffet breakfast and the complimentary sangria between 3-4 were among the highlights of staying here. The rooms were fairly typical Key West, somewhat small, some bathrooms were updated and others were not. We stayed during an unusual cold spell and had to use the wall heater. It was loud and put out an unfavorable smell. It took some time, but it did eventually burn off. We could have used some instruction on the various remotes. One was for the air/heat wall unit, one was for the ceiling fan and the other for the TV. We never could figure out how to turn off the fan. The room was decently clean, but needed a good dusting. Overall, we would stay here again. The location, food and drink are really good, the bed is comfortable, but the room could use a bit better cleaning and instructions for using the remotes. The area outside our second floor room was large and private with chairs to relax in. That was nice, too, as well as the pool.
This is a great location if you like to walk to town. We have stayed in 2 other historic properties in the Old Town area and understand the charm of an old home. This was by far the noisest room with street traffic and roosters crowing between 2 am and 5 am. We were on the bottom corner room and could hear the people in the hallway, upstairs, and beside us all hours of the day. The breakfast was fantastic. There is only one pool.
This was a beautiful, spotless 5-star property when it was Kimpton. Now that it has changed hands, it is very obvious it is no longer Kimpton. It's a little shabby, a little less friendly, a little dirty, with fewer amenities, and yet somehow more expensive. I agree with a previous reviewer about the dirty bathroom/grout and needing to wear shoes. When it was Kimpton, you were given welcome drinks. Now you get an invite to the Happy Hour 3 hours after you check out. Of course, we were not told about it at the unfriendly check-in or about the breakfast. Great location, and it was still a good time, but crossing this one off the list. There are too many other good choices to overpay for sub-par.
The front desk staff—especially Greg—were wonderful. Very friendly, knowledgeable, and welcoming. The breakfast each morning was also a nice touch, and my wife and I genuinely enjoyed it. Ridley House has a lot of charm, and we really appreciate the character of a historic property from the late 1800s. That’s exactly the type of place we prefer to stay. That said, some areas of the room could benefit from a bit more attention, particularly in terms of maintenance and cleanliness. The bathroom and bedding weren’t quite up to the standard we’ve experienced at other B&Bs. Overall, we had a pleasant stay and truly believe this property has great potential with just a little extra care in the rooms.
A solid 47/5 (super close to 5 stars). We visit Key West with family annually. This year we booked 3 rooms at the Ridley House from a Monday-Thursday. Everyone absolutely loved the location. You are a close walk to Duval as well as the marina. The chef in the morning made truly great breakfast. The mattress and sheets were very comfortable. The only downside I would say is that we all had different experiences with the humidity in our rooms. One room was great and the other two rooms were super humid inside for some reason. With that said we are absolutely going to return to this place. We were so happy with it. Side note, the pool was 85 degrees which was nice and comfortable.
This is a historic hotel that offers clean rooms and a great location (walkable to everything). The staff is friendly and the complimentary breakfast is good, along with the happy hour sangria. We were able to check-in early, which we appreciated greatly as well. That said, the 4 nights we stayed here, 2/4 nights the fire alarm went off. First time was at 1 am, and second time was around 9 pm. The alarm is so aggressively loud it could burst your eardrums if you don't plug them. Given it is an older, historic building, you can also hear everything. If you are a light sleeper, try to request a third floor room if possible, otherwise you will likely hear the upstairs guests. Can't control the street noise, unfortunately. They also locked us out of our room 30 minutes before check-out time. We were just getting back from our final walk to grab our suitcases and our key cards didn't work. While this may have just been a system glitch, it added to the growing list of small annoyances we experienced throughout the stay. While we enjoyed the location, friendly staff and the cleanliness of our room, given the above, I am not sure we would chose to stay here when visiting in the future.
OMG, the chef-made breakfasts by the pool! Cozy rooms (every room is different) and just a block from Duval St. We had a lovely second-floor room (no elevator) in a 19th century house. Bliss carried our bags upstairs for us and made sure we were comfortable. Large bathroom, mini-fridge, comfy couch with coffee table, and a porch with loveseat and spiral stairs down. (Also, there are gentler stairs.) The long, narrow pool was a mix of sun and shade most of the day, and never felt crowded. Towels and various sunscreens were provided. In the afternoons, homemade sangria is served poolside. Breakfast comes with the room. Coffee is usually available by 7:15-ish, and breakfast officially starts at 8. Chef cooks eggs to order, along with plenty of other Continental selections. (Sunday's are always Eggs Benedict!)
The Ridley House was such a lovely place for our temporary home base while visiting Key West. The room was well appointed and comfortable, the breakfast was special with a generous spread of continental foods and Chef Jesus ready to prepare our eggs of choice (Benedict was the Sunday treat), Sangrias each afternoon at 3, and kind staff ready to help with anything we needed. It was relatively quiet compared to places closer to Duval St. Pet friendly. Highly recommend staying at The Ridley House! Tip: As with everywhere in Key West, parking is a challenge and there was no onsite parking. So we parked at the City of Key West Old Town Parking Garage 4 blocks away at $38 per day (likely that price increases during peak season). We were there during the “off-season” (late August).
This facility should receive 5 stars. It offers a unique climate of an old house, I can still remember this very pleasant smell after opening the front door or afternoons and evenings at the swimming pool. Also the breakfast was good, much better than what other American hotels offer. There were however simple drawbacks: I got really upset, when I saw two bottles of water in my room, but they cost $5 each! Does it really help financially in running your business? It makes a really negative impression. At breakfast there were also small faults: the milk and orange juice went bad, mozarella also did not seem very fresh. Otherwise, however, everything was tasty. It is also worth mentioning, that the level of noise coming from the street makes it difficult to sleep (room no. 1). As we checked in after 6 p.m. there was nobody at the reception desk, the contact with the facility was difficult, nobody answered the phone, we had to text them after arriving at the place and wait for somebody to let us in. There is room for improvements, but generally the place is worth recommending.
We come to KW often and have stayed at this location 3-4 times in different rooms. Only 1 room we considered enjoyable. Some of the buildings are old and very loud. You can hear other people in their rooms. If your room is on the street, there is street/car noise constantly that’s very loud. The showers in some rooms are scuzzy. People rave about the breakfast but it’s pretty average. Not a selling point in my opinion. We had an issue with the guest service team this visit. We checked into the room, dropped our bags, and left for the day. Didn’t get back until around 11pm and the room was HOT so we ended up leaving and staying somewhere else because it was unbearable. The next day, guest services called us back and it was the most unproductive and unhelpful conversation. The location is great but it’s not worth staying here again. We won’t be back and won’t recommend this hotel to anyone. We’ve stayed at other places that were much better but decided to give Ridley another try. Our mistake, unfortunately. I’d recommend staying at the Curry Mansion or Island City House instead if you’re looking for good location and rooms with a historic KW feel.
